President Donald Trump has appointed Steve Witkoff as the US foreign envoy to lead talks regarding a new nuclear deal with Iran. While the US believes these talks will be direct, Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated they will be indirect.
Oman will act as a mediator in the discussions, focusing on Iranian denuclearization. These talks mark the first formal engagement between Tehran and Washington since the 2015 nuclear deal negotiated during the Obama administration.
The announcement of these talks has caused concern in Israel, as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was reportedly taken by surprise and the talks are not to Israel's liking.
